High Traffic Applications
With increased usage of hardwood flooring in commercial and other high-traffic applications, species hardness has become a prime factor in flooring selection. For this reason, Kentucky Wood Floors first recommended the specification of Rift and Quartered Oak in place of Plain Oak. More recently we have introduced into our U.S. and foreign markets several imported species which exhibit superior relative hardness qualities, as follows:
Brazilian Ebony
3130
Brazilian Cherry
2440
Purple heart
2140
Maple
1450
Mayan Walnut
1400
Ash
1320
Plain Red Oak
1210
Teak
1030
American Walnut
1010
American Cherry
950
Fire Resistance
Some of our imported species have been tested for resistance to flame spread and have achieved a Class B rating (Red Oak is Class C). Therefore, in commercial applications where flame spread resistance is critical, these species can be specified.
Environmental Statement
Kentucky Wood Floors uses lumber from trees which have been harvested by selectively cutting mature trees. This practice is the exact opposite of the clear cutting being done primarily by the natives to clear land for agricultural purposes. Selective cutting provides revenue from trees which, if left un-harvested, would eventually die of old age. This, coupled with replanting, reforests the forest for future generations. Indeed clear cutting is a practice which Kentucky Wood Floors greatly deplores!
Ordering, Installation & Maintenance
Measuring Procedure:
To order Custom Classics: Lay out sections on an accurate, scaled floor plan. Kentucky Wood Floors will perform this service upon request, at no charge. Count number of sections. Multiply number of sections by square feet per section.
If border is to be specified, add to the above quantity the amount of Feature Strip used to fill space between sections and perimeters. For all other floors, add 5% (up to 10% if significant cutting waste is anticipated due to chopped-up or small areas) to measure square footage. Order this amount or nearest multiple of full carton.
Installation/Finishing/Maintenance:
All Kentucky Wood Floors are glue-down in US Mastic II, except solid plank and strip with lengths in excess of 40" which are nailed down.
Recommended finishing procedure for unfinished floors is sanding, filling, two coats of penetrating oil sealer and the urethane finish.
